Bernese Mountain Dogs originated in the Swiss Alps, so naturally, they are a hotter-natured breed, but they can do well in the hotter climates, with proper management and some fun things to keep them cool.

  1. Keep their coats shorter in the summer, this allows for more airflow through their coats, along with brushing them frequently to prevent any mats.

  2. Keep their water bowl full of fresh cool water at all times.

  3. Offer a bowl of ice cubes for a fun playtime after a romp outside! This is also something great for teething puppies.

  4. Have elevated dog beds such as a Kuranda or a cooling mat.

  5. When taking your dog out in public, be sure to be very mindful of hot pavement, dogs can quickly get terrible burns on their paws from the pavement or sidewalks! They make boots for dogs for this purpose.

  6. Always take a travel water bottle and water for them if you plan to be outside or on a trip.

  7. Start exposing your puppy from a young age to water, so they learn to enjoy swimming in lakes, creeks, or the ocean.

  8. Don't put any bedding or blankets in their crates- they much prefer to lay on the plastic tray to help them stay cool, and you may find they won't settle down to sleep if they are too hot.

  9. Limit time outdoors unless you are providing plenty of shade and cool water. Bernedoodles do love to be outside, and can be fine for an all day event, just be mindful of their needs as well as yours to stay hydrated and in the shade!

Enjoy your summer with your Bernedoodle besties and get outside and have some fun together!
