Keeping your Bernedoodle's coat soft and shiny isn't that hard, but it does require a little bit of time and effort. If your Bernedoodle has a straight coat, this should only take a few minutes a week, if they have a wavy coat, a few minutes a couple times a week should suffice, and if they are curly coated, you might find a few minutes a day is needed.
First, don't wait until your new puppy is 3-4 months old before you start grooming!!! They need to be used to the hair dryer, comb and brush, and this will make your job so much easier if you start getting them used to it now!
Second, having the right tools is important. You will need a metal comb, a good slicker brush, and optional products would be waterless shampoo, a deodorizer for in between baths, and Cowboy Magic's Conditioner.
If you have a wavy or curly doodle, I recommend putting a couple drops of the Cowboy Magic Conditioner in your palm, rubbing your hands together and rubbing it all over their coat, especially in the places that like to get mats - ears and under ears, face, around their collar, belly, legs and armpits.
Then, take your metal comb and just start working through their fur, making sure you get everywhere. For their legs, it works best even if you comb up first, to make sure you got all the way down to their skin, and on their back, just comb backwards. This helps catch any knots close to their skin. Once you don't feel any more mats or tangles, then you can go over them with the slicker brush to fluff and soften them up!.
Once you finish, spray with your favorite deodorizer for a fresh smell. Bernedoodles really shouldn't be bathed more than once a month, unless necessary as it can dry their skin, but you can spray with waterless shampoo and rub in with a wet washcloth in between baths as well.
When you do bathe them, towel dry them, and then always blow dry! A high velocity blow dryer works sooo much faster and better and helps push mats away from their skin as well as giving them that fluffy look they get fresh from the groomers. Plus, it helps keep them desensitized to the hair dryer, which is also important! Then, after they are completely dry run over them with your comb and brush!
With a straight coat doodle, you may find you only need a slicker brush, they are so much easier to keep combed! But don't be led astray by false information online - just because they are straight, doesn't mean they will shed any more or be less hypoallergenic! That all has to do with furnishings, the long hair on their faces that gives them that 'doodle' look. Happy grooming!
